Artists

The arts are often used as a  coping strategy for trauma, and therefore were honored at the BACEs Summit.  The Petersburg Health Department invited three artists to work with the Petersburg Community to create collaborative and uplifting art projects.

Meet the Artists

Danita

Danita Rountree Green

Danita Rountree Green is an author, radio personality and entrepreneur, who focuses her time and talents on issues important to marginalized communities. She was invited to create poetry with a group of students from the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School. In addition to this she encouraged the youth to spend time with seniors of the community to help strengthen community bonds.

Kwame Shaka Opare

Kwame Shaka Opare is a classically trained West African dancer. He has produced works for all of the major traditional African and traditional/contemporary African dance companies in NY, and toured with the Broadway’s STOMP(1998). He was invited to create multiple dance pieces with students from Petersburg’s Peabody Middle School. The students then performed the dances at the BACEs Summit.

Orisegun 2

Orisegun

Orisegun is a Petersburg Fine Artist who specializes in painting and mixed media. He was invited to create a community mural with Elementary School Students and a mosaic sculpture for the Petersburg health department.
